Festivals and Fetes: The midi-Pyrenees is a magnet for music festivals, all within half an hours drive: The Festival of country music is held in Mirande over five days in early July. The streets of Vic Fezensac are alive with the sounds of salsa during the Tempo Latino at the end of July. Marciac hosts an Internationally renowned Jazz Festival during first two weeks of August. The Medieval Fete at Montreal du Gers offers an evening of great entertainment for all the family. Enjoy the traditional cuisine and wine in the town square and watch in amazement as the entertainers flame-throw, swallow swords and balance precariously above on the tight-rope. Many crafts such as pottery and paintings are for sale around the square. Fources is a beautiful little town built in a circular formation around a circular central 'square'! This small but perfectly formed town holds regular brocante markets, a book market and a flower festival
Special Places: THE PYRENEES: Ski or snowboard, rafting or walking; explore the alpine meadows and craggy mountain tops LOURDES: The most visited shrine in Europe, take the pilgrimage and see beyond the commercial enterprise. AUCH: Capital of the Gers. Well worth a visit. The cathedral has 113 carved oak choir stalls portraying more than 1500 figures and scenes. Nearby is the Escalier Monumental, a broad stairway of 370 steps on which stands an imposing statue of D'Artagnan the dashing and most famous of all Musketeers. Discover some pretty streets filled with lovely shops and plenty of cafes. PAU: Delightful old town and stylish new shops, the two blend well. Castle and formal gardens to explore and views of the Pyrenees which are just out of this world. For something a little unusual, visit Pau in late June to watch the Grand Prix de Pau Historique, a premier International classic car race around the streets of Pau.

Savour the best of Gascogne. This handsome home set in five acres, commanding views over it's gardens and surrounding countryside. The pace is slow, the food sublime, the locals friendly. This is a beguiling corner of southwest France, where stressed Parisians dream of buying their holiday homes. The landscape is as unscarred today as when d'Artagnan, one of Alexandre Dumas' famed musketeers, walked his native land. This is Gascogne.

The sleepy villages, vineyards, maize and sunflower fields that define the countryside are still free of the crowds that flock to neighbouring regions. There are no motorways, no power stations or industry, it has remained a rural backwater, undisturbed by modernity. The region is clearly defined by its hearty food and drink; duck is the culinary king, foie gras has attained reverential status, and Armagnac, cognac's earthier cousin, is the local digestif. Life is slow and relaxed, it's little wonder the locals enjoy the longest life expectancy in France.
